Most migration guides tell you to "set up 301 redirects" and move on. That advice is not wrong, it is just not specific enough to act on. The reason this matters more than it used to: crawlers are already spending a growing share of their budget on hops and dead ends. Across the sites we monitor, redirects rose from 13.9% of all crawler responses in January 2026 to 14.9% in June, while 4xx rejections hit 37.2%. Adding a chain-heavy migration on top of that is asking a crawler to work harder for less.

The honest answer is longer than most teams plan for.
