AI Visibility Checker: See Which Brands AI Names Instead of Yours

AI brand visibility is how often AI assistants name your brand when they answer questions in your category. This free checker measures your share of voice against the competitors named alongside you, using aggregated ChatGPT and Google AI Overview answers rather than a single live prompt.

Nick SawinyhReviewed by Nick Sawinyh, CEO & Founder

Enter a brand name or its domain. A domain is reduced to the brand name before it is checked.

How does the AI visibility checker work?

Each check runs two lookups against SEOmator's own LLM Mentions dataset, which aggregates the brands, domains and pages appearing across a large sample of real AI answers. The first returns your mention totals on both Google AI Overview and ChatGPT; the second returns the brands co-mentioned with you, which is what makes a share calculable at all. Neither sends a prompt to an assistant and reads back today's reply — assistants are non-deterministic, so a single live answer cannot be compared against anything, including itself. Two corrections run before the percentages: spelling variants of one company are merged, and descriptive entities the dataset misclassifies as brands are removed. Both change the headline number rather than just tidying the table.

  1. Enter a brand or a domain

Type a brand name, or paste a URL and let the checker reduce it — https://www.ahrefs.com/blog becomes ahrefs. Domain-shaped input has to lose its TLD, because the dataset indexes brands by name and a raw domain target returns nothing at all.

  2. Two lookups run in one pass

One call returns your mentions and AI search volume on Google AI Overview and ChatGPT. A second returns the brands named alongside you in ChatGPT answers, over-fetching deliberately so the table is still full length after the cleanup pass removes non-brands.

  3. Read your share against the set

You get both platform totals and a ranked table of up to ten brands with each one's share, your own row highlighted. Results are cached for 24 hours, and the coverage — ChatGPT, United States, English — is printed under the table instead of left implied.

What features are free, and what does an account add?

Everything in this grid runs right now with no account and no credit card. The marked features are what tracking adds once you sign up.

Brand or domain input

Enter a brand name or paste any URL. The checker strips the protocol, subdomain, path and TLD down to the brand label, so example.com and Example return the same report.

Two AI surfaces per check

One run returns your mention count on Google AI Overview and on ChatGPT side by side, rather than making you pick a platform and lose the comparison.

AI search volume beside every count

Each platform card carries the question volume sitting behind the answers you appear in, so you can tell frequent-but-trivial mentions apart from rare-but-valuable ones.

The competitive set, ranked

Up to ten co-mentioned brands with mentions and share of voice each, your row flagged. Most free checkers return your own number and stop, which is the half that cannot be acted on.

Cleaned before it is counted

Casing variants of one company are merged so it is not listed twice at half weight, and descriptive entities like "SEO platform" are dropped so they stop padding the denominator.

Scope stated, not implied

The results name their own coverage — ChatGPT, United States, English for the brand table. There is no market picker, because the underlying brand data has no other market to offer.

Is an AI visibility number worth acting on?

Nick SawinyhReviewed byNick Sawinyh · CEO & Founder

Let me start where the pages selling you an AI visibility tool usually won't. This number is narrower than the category name suggests: the competitor table is ChatGPT, United States, English, and it is aggregated history rather than a live prompt, so it lags by design. Read it as a worldwide share of voice and you have misled yourself before the data got a chance to. What it is genuinely good for is the thing a score out of 100 never shows you — who is in the conversation instead of you. Across the category prompt sets we track, the top three brands take 57.6% of all mentions and the leader alone takes 31.2% (July 2026), so fourth place is much nearer to invisible than a bar chart makes it look. When we ran our own domain while building this, SEOmator came back with 98 Google AI Overview mentions and 21 on ChatGPT, and still did not appear in the brand set for its own category. That is an uncomfortable finding, and it is worth more than a flattering index.

How does our expert read an AI visibility check?

Nick SawinyhNick Sawinyh · CEO & Founder
  1. Test the discovery phrasing, not just your name

Across the prompt sets we track, brands are named in 92-97% of prompts that already mention them but only 11-18% of discovery prompts that describe a need without naming anyone (July 2026). Run your category term — "best rank tracker for agencies" — as well as your brand. The branded lookup almost always looks healthy; the discovery one is where the gap actually is.

  2. Treat fourth place as absent

AI answers are winner-take-most. In the category prompt sets we track, the top three brands hold 57.6% of mentions and brands ranked four and five split about 15% between them (July 2026). If your row is fifth at 6%, the honest reading is not "mid-table" — it is that most answers in your category never mention you, and the goal is displacing a name above you rather than adding one more.

  3. Re-check monthly, because model updates reset the board

In a quiet week the median brand moves under 4 percentage points. Around the two major model updates we detected in the first half of 2026, 17% of tracked brands swung more than 20 points within a fortnight, and only 38% of those that fell had recovered 60 days later. A quarterly spot-check misses the event entirely and shows you the aftermath as if it were a trend.

  4. Read the names you did not expect

The table is the competitive set as assistants currently perceive it, which rarely matches the one you would have written down. An unfamiliar name holding 8% is telling you which pages models are reading about your category. Those pages are the outreach target — not your own site, which the model already knows how to find.

  5. Fix the ranking before chasing the mention

Citations mostly go to pages that already rank: across the answers we parse, 54.7% of ChatGPT's cited URLs in the first half of 2026 were already in the organic top 20. If the page you want cited sits at position 40, its problem is a ranking problem. Check the position first with the Google SERP rank checker, then come back here.

  6. Compare like with like when you track it

Share is calculated across the brands displayed, not across every AI answer ever produced, so a longer or shorter table moves every percentage in it. When you re-run the check next month, hold the table length constant and compare mentions as well as share — the raw count is the figure that cannot be changed by the size of the set around it.

  1. What is AI brand visibility?

AI brand visibility is how often an AI assistant names your brand when it answers a question in your category. It is not a ranking and it has no position number. When someone asks an assistant which tool to buy or which supplier to use, the assistant returns a short list of names, and those names collect the attention that used to go to the top three links.

Share of voice turns that into a comparable figure. If ten brands are named across the answers in your space and yours accounts for a quarter of the mentions, you hold roughly a quarter of the available attention.

The two can diverge sharply from classic search. A brand can rank well organically and stay almost invisible in AI answers, usually because the sources assistants draw from never mention it.

  2. How does this checker measure share of voice?

The checker runs two lookups against SEOmator's own LLM Mentions dataset and returns three things: your mention count on Google AI Overview, your mention count on ChatGPT, and a ranked table of the brands named alongside you.

Share is each brand's mentions divided by the total across the brands in the table. That makes it a share of the visible competitive set, not of every AI answer ever produced.

Two corrections run before the percentages are calculated, both of which came out of testing the raw data rather than the documentation:

    CorrectionWhy it is needed
Merge spelling variantsThe raw data returns SEMrush and Semrush as separate rows, splitting one company's mentions across two lines
Remove descriptive entitiesThe dataset classes phrases like SEO platform and Portuguese footballer as brands, which pads the denominator

Neither correction is cosmetic. Both change the headline number, as the next section shows.

  3. What we found in the raw mention data

We built this tool in July 2026 and ran it against our own domain and a set of well-known SaaS brands while testing. Three things showed up in the raw responses that the finished checker now corrects for. These are single test runs rather than a large study, so treat them as observations about the data source, not as market research.

Roughly a quarter of the returned "brands" are not brands

On a semrush lookup, four of the nine entities returned were descriptions rather than companies: SEO platform, SEO software company, American singer-songwriter, and Portuguese footballer. Together they accounted for about 27% of the mention total.

Left in place, they inflate the denominator and understate every real company. Filtering them moved SEMrush's share from 25.1% to 34.4% on the identical query, a swing of more than nine points. The dataset offers no field to filter on, so the checker separates the two by capitalisation: descriptive phrases leave later words lowercase, while real multi-word brands capitalise them.

The same company comes back under two spellings

SEMrush and Semrush arrive as separate rows with separate mention counts. Any tool that reports the raw rows will show one company twice, each time at roughly half its real weight, and will rank it below competitors it actually leads.

A brand can have thousands of mentions and still be absent from the competitive set

We ran our own domain and got an uncomfortable result. seomator returned 98 mentions in Google AI Overview answers and 21 in ChatGPT, yet SEOmator did not appear in the ChatGPT brand set for its own category at all. Ahrefs, SEMrush, and SEObility did.

The brands that did appear were each named once or twice, so this is a thin slice rather than a verdict. It still illustrates the point the tool exists to make: mention volume and competitive presence are different measurements, and a healthy-looking total can hide absence from the conversation that decides purchases.

  4. Why does the competitor table only cover ChatGPT and the US?

Because that is the only market the brand-level data covers, and we confirmed it directly rather than taking the documentation's word for it.

Requesting the same co-mention data with the platform set to Google AI Overview returns zero rows. Not sparse results, zero, for domain and keyword lookups alike. Brand entities are extracted only from ChatGPT answers, and that extraction is published for the US/English market alone.

This is why the checker has no country or language selector, unlike our other market-aware tools. A picker that could only ever return an empty table would be worse than no picker. Mention totals are shown for both platforms, since those exist at the total level, and the results state the scope in plain text.

If your market is not US/English, read the competitive table as the English-language conversation about your category. That is frequently still the conversation shaping how models describe your space.

  5. How do you read mentions against AI search volume?

The two numbers answer different questions, and reading only the first is the most common mistake.

Mentions counts how often the brand was named. It measures presence.

AI search volume estimates how much question volume sits behind the answers where the brand appears. It measures importance.

    PatternWhat it usually means
High mentions, modest AI search volumeAppearing often, in low-stakes answers
Low mentions, high AI search volumeAppearing rarely, in unusually valuable answers
High on bothEstablished presence in the questions that matter
Low on bothAssistants are not describing your category with you in it

The second row is the one worth hunting for. It is often a stronger commercial position than the first, and it disappears entirely if you rank brands by mention count alone.

  6. What does it mean when your brand is missing?

It means assistants are answering questions in your category without naming you. That is a real finding, and it is the most actionable output this tool produces.

Check the input before drawing conclusions. Enter the brand name rather than a domain, since the data indexes brands by name. Try the category term your customers would actually type, because answers are written in the language of the question, not the language of your product page.

If the brand is genuinely absent, the table still earns its keep: the brands listed are your competitive set as assistants currently perceive it. In our experience that list rarely matches the one you would have written down, and the unexpected names are the useful part.

  7. How do you get mentioned in ChatGPT answers?

Assistants build answers from sources, so mentions follow from being present and quotable in the material they draw on. Three things move the number, roughly in order of effort.

Be present on the sources that get cited. If the pages cited for your category never mention you, on-site work will not put you in the answer. Identify those pages and get accurately described on them.

Answer the underlying question directly. Content that states its answer near the top, in plain language, is easier for a model to lift and attribute than content that circles the topic first. State the claim, then the context.

Stay machine-readable. Crawlers have to read you cleanly before any of this applies. Our GEO audit tool checks AI crawler access, structured data, and passage structure together, and the free llms.txt generator produces the file. You can also check a specific query with the Google AI Mode checker.

  8. What this checker does not measure

Four limits worth knowing before you act on the numbers.

The data is aggregated, so it lags. It will not reflect a campaign that launched last week, and it is not a real-time monitor.

The competitor table covers ChatGPT for US/English, as described above. It is not every assistant in every language, and we would rather say so than present a partial dataset as a global one.

Share is calculated across the brands displayed, so a longer or shorter table changes every percentage. Compare like with like when you track it over time.

Mentions are not conversions. Being named in an answer is the start of the journey. What happens next still depends on everything that has always mattered.

Who is this AI visibility checker for?

Agencies

Run a prospect's brand before the pitch and open with the list of competitors AI names instead of them. It is a finding they have almost certainly never seen, and it reframes the conversation from rankings to who owns the answer.

In-house brand and SEO teams

Baseline your share of voice before a GEO programme starts, so the work has a number to move against. Re-run it monthly and you can separate your own progress from a model update that shifted everyone.

Founders and solo marketers

Find out in one lookup whether assistants name you at all when someone describes your product without knowing your name. If the table comes back without your row, that is the whole roadmap for the next quarter.

Why use SEOmator's AI visibility checker?

Free, with no sign-up wall

No account, no credit card, no trial that expires mid-audit. This is the most expensive tool on the site to run per query, and it is still free to use.

Your competitive set, not just your number

A mention count on its own cannot be acted on — 40 mentions is neither good nor bad until you know what the leader has. Every check returns the ranked field alongside your row.

The data is cleaned before it is counted

On a live test lookup, filtering out misclassified descriptive entities moved the target brand's share from 25.1% to 34.4% on the identical query. Tools that report the raw rows are quietly understating every real company in the table.

Two AI surfaces in a single check

Google AI Overview and ChatGPT mention totals come back together, so you can see whether you are strong on the surface that answers searches and weak on the one that answers conversations.

The scope is printed on the results

Coverage is stated in plain text under the table rather than buried in a footnote, and the market picker that could only ever return an empty table was left off on purpose.

Wired into the rest of the GEO toolkit

Pair it with the GEO audit tool for crawler access and passage structure, the Google AI Mode checker for a specific query, and the free llms.txt generator for the file itself.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Brand Visibility

  • What is AI brand visibility?

AI brand visibility is how often your brand is named in the answers AI assistants generate, rather than how highly you rank in a list of links. When someone asks an assistant to recommend a tool, a supplier, or a product, the brands it names capture the attention that used to go to the top of the search results. Share of voice measures how much of that naming goes to you and how much goes to your competitors.

  • How do I check my brand's visibility in AI search?

Enter your brand name or domain above. The checker returns your mention count on Google AI Overview and ChatGPT, then a ranked table of the brands named alongside you with each one's share of voice. A domain is reduced to its brand label before the lookup, so example.com and Example return the same result. No signup, and no credit card.

  • Where does this data come from?

It comes from SEOmator's own LLM Mentions dataset, which aggregates the brands, domains, and pages appearing across a large sample of real AI answers. Pressing the button does not send your question to ChatGPT and read back today's reply. Aggregated history is what makes the figures comparable between two brands or two points in time, because assistants are non-deterministic: ask the same question twice and you can get two different lists.

  • Why does the competitor table only cover ChatGPT and the United States?

Because that is the only market the underlying brand-entity data covers. We tested this directly: the identical request with the platform set to Google AI Overview returns zero rows, for domain and keyword lookups alike. Since the ChatGPT dataset is published for US/English only, there is no multi-market version of the competitor table. Mention totals are shown for both platforms, and the results state the scope rather than implying worldwide coverage.

  • How is share of voice calculated here?

Each brand's mentions divided by the total mentions across the brands shown in the table, so it is a share of the visible competitive set rather than of every AI answer ever produced. Two corrections are applied first. Spelling variants of one company are merged, because the raw data returns SEMrush and Semrush as separate rows. Descriptive entities are removed, because the dataset classes phrases like "SEO platform" as brands.

  • How do I see my brand mentions in ChatGPT?

The share-of-voice table is ChatGPT mention data, so your row is your ChatGPT mention count for that topic. If your brand is missing from the table entirely, assistants are answering questions in your category without naming you. That is a real finding rather than an error: when we ran our own domain in July 2026 it returned 98 Google AI Overview mentions and 21 ChatGPT mentions, yet SEOmator did not appear in the ChatGPT brand set for its own category, while Ahrefs and SEMrush did.

  • What is AI search volume?

AI search volume estimates how much question volume sits behind the answers where a brand appears. Mentions measure presence, how often you come up. AI search volume measures importance, how much demand those answers serve. A brand with fewer mentions against very high AI search volume is appearing in a smaller number of unusually valuable answers, which is often the stronger position and is invisible if you read mention counts alone.

  • How do I track AI search visibility over time?

Re-run the same check on a fixed schedule and compare like with like, or use a tracker that does it for you. The cadence matters more than the tool. Across the brands we track, the median week-to-week move in mention rate is under four percentage points in a quiet week — but around the two major model updates of the first half of 2026, 17% of tracked brands swung more than 20 points within a fortnight, and only 38% of those that fell had recovered two months later. A quarterly spot-check misses the event and reads the aftermath as a trend. One caveat when you compare runs by hand: share is calculated across the brands displayed, so hold the table length constant and track the raw mention count alongside the percentage.

  • What is an AI visibility score?

Usually a vendor's composite index that blends mention frequency, sentiment, and citation counts into one number out of 100. This checker deliberately does not produce one. A composite hides which input moved, so a score that drops six points tells you nothing you can act on, and no two vendors calculate it the same way, which makes scores incomparable between tools. You get the raw inputs instead: mentions per platform, AI search volume, and your share against the named competitive set. Those three are auditable, and you can see exactly which one changed.

  • What is the best AI visibility tool?

It depends on the question you are answering, and any single product name is a sales answer rather than an honest one. For a free read on whether assistants name you at all and which brands they name instead, this checker does it in one lookup with no account. For daily monitoring across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode in several markets, you need a tracking product — ours, or Profound, Peec AI, or the AI visibility modules Ahrefs and Semrush have added. Judge them on three things: which engines they actually query rather than model, whether they show you competitors or only your own number, and whether they state their market coverage instead of implying worldwide data.

  • How do I get my brand mentioned in AI answers?

Assistants assemble answers from sources, so a mention follows from being present and accurately described in the material they draw on. Three things move it. Get named on the pages that already get cited for your category, because on-site work cannot put you into an answer whose sources never mention you. Answer the underlying question near the top of your page in plain language, since a model lifts a stated claim more readily than one it has to infer. And stay machine-readable — our GEO audit tool checks AI crawler access, structured data, and passage structure together. One structural constraint is worth knowing before you start: in the prompt sets we track, the top three brands in a category hold 57.6% of all mentions as of July 2026, so this is a displacement problem, not an addition problem.

  • What does this tool not measure?

Four things worth knowing before you act on it. The data is aggregated, so it lags and will not reflect a campaign launched last week. The competitor table covers ChatGPT for US/English only. Share is calculated across the brands displayed, so a longer or shorter table changes the percentages. And mentions are not conversions: being named in an answer is the start of the journey, not the end of it.
