Bing crawls roughly 36 pages for every visitor it sends back; Google needs about five. We compared both engines on market share, AI search, ad costs, and our own crawler data.

Google and Bing are not two versions of the same product competing for the same 100%. Google holds roughly 89–90% of global search and returns a visitor for about every 5 pages it crawls. Bing sits near 4–5% and needs roughly 36 pages per referral — about 8× the crawl cost per visit. Optimize for Google by default; add Bing when your audience is desktop, Windows, or enterprise.
Quick verdict: Choose Google as the baseline — it is where the traffic and the crawl efficiency both are. Add Bing deliberately if you sell to Microsoft-ecosystem buyers, run B2B on desktop, or want cheaper paid clicks. Bing is a supplement to an SEO strategy in 2026, not an alternative to one.

Here is the number I wish more comparisons published: how many pages an engine crawls for every visitor it sends back. It reframes "should I bother with Bing?" from a matter of taste into a budget question.
Across the sites we monitor, Bing's crawler took about 35 pages for every referral session it returned (July 1–21, 2026). Google's ratio was about 4. Cloudflare Radar, measuring an entirely different population — its own global edge network — put the same two operators at 36.6 and 4.8 for the 28 days ending 3 August 2026.

Two things to hold onto here. First, a high ratio is not automatically bad — it's the price of admission for an engine that might send you traffic later. Second, this gap is structural, not a blip: both windows we measured agree within a few percent, and Microsoft's ratio has drifted upward across the year (about 28:1 in January to 35:1 in July on our panel), not down.

These figures come from our B2B-heavy customer panel, so treat them as directional for consumer retail. The direction, though, has held across every month we've measured.
Our first step is to journey down the memory lane of these search engines, uncovering their humble beginnings and phenomenal growth over the years.

The more interesting movement is at the margin. According to Digital Applied's 2026 market analysis, Google's all-device share dropped about 1.5 percentage points year-over-year — its largest single-year decline — with the lost share splitting between Bing (helped by Copilot integration), AI search assistants, and a small Yandex recovery.
While this might seem minuscule in comparison, it's worth noting that Bing is the default search engine for Microsoft devices and services, which bolsters its user base.
Domain popularity tells the same story from another angle: Cloudflare Radar ranks google.com #1 among all internet domains and bing.com #17 (3 August 2026). Both are top-200 properties. They are not in the same weight class.
While Google dominates the market, overlooking Bing's potential could be a missed opportunity. This is especially true if your target audience aligns more with Bing user demographics, such as being an older demographic or frequent users of Microsoft products.
Mostly, no — and this is the finding that surprised me most. Independent research by Glen Allsopp comparing the two indexes found that only 48 domains appear in both engines' top 100, and just 162 of the top 500 domains overlap. Both engines rank a similar number of domains; they simply disagree about which ones.
That has a practical consequence. If you assume Bing rankings mirror your Google rankings, you are guessing. Track them separately or you're flying blind on roughly two-thirds of the picture.
It's clear that Google and Bing share several similarities and yet have unique differences. Both are powered with strong algorithms and AI capabilities, aiming for accurate and personalized results. Each has a user base that finds their features, interface and results appealing.

Though exact numbers are elusive due to constant updates, Google's index exceeds Bing's by a significant amount. Crawl activity is a reasonable proxy: across the sites we track, Googlebot accounted for 12.53% of all bot hits in July 2026 versus Bingbot's 5.17% — a 2.4:1 ratio. Cloudflare Radar's global measurement for the 28 days to 3 August 2026 was nearly identical: GoogleBot 12.83%, BingBot 5.01%.
But does size equate to better? Not necessarily. Both search engines return strong results; the index gap matters most for long-tail and newly published pages, where Google's crawl frequency gives it a real advantage.
Presenting visual information is a vital aspect of search engines. Let's look at how both manage it:
🖼️ Google: Google image search works remarkably well with an extensive index of images. It provides detailed image information, such as the image size, source website, and more on click. Google also offers better filtering options to find specific image types, sizes, and colors.

Bing's image search results appear in a well-organized grid with less white space between images. It also incorporates an image feed feature that lets users personalize the images seen on the home page and search results, populated based on their past searches.
This is where both engines changed the most since this article was first published, and where the old comparison no longer holds.
🤖 Google: Gemini is Google's AI assistant, and AI Overviews are its in-SERP answer layer. Across the keywords we track in our rank tracker, AI Overviews appeared on 27.4% of queries in July 2026, up from 18.9% in January — steady growth, not a spike. On SaaS and comparison queries it runs higher still.
🤖 Bing: Microsoft's AI surface is Copilot. Worth correcting a common mix-up: Bing Chat was the original name, and Microsoft renamed it Copilot in late 2023 — Copilot is the current product, not the predecessor. Copilot is built into Bing search, Edge, and Windows, and cites its sources inline, which makes it a genuine visibility channel rather than a novelty.
Cortana, Microsoft's old voice assistant, is no longer part of this comparison — Microsoft retired it from Windows in late 2023. Google Assistant continues, though Google has been folding its capabilities into Gemini.
The practical shift: optimizing for Bing in 2026 partly means optimizing for Copilot, and optimizing for Google increasingly means earning AI Overview citations. There's a neat proxy for how seriously the web takes each crawler: how many sites bother writing rules about it. Cloudflare Radar's robots.txt scan (3 August 2026) counts the domains naming each agent:

Two readings. Forty-one percent more domains write rules about Googlebot than bingbot — attention tracks market share. But the sharper point is that Google-Extended (655) outranks Googlebot itself (399): site owners now write more rules about Google's AI-training agent than about its search crawler.
