How does the Website Technology Checker work?

Detection is inference, not a readout. The lookup requests the domain the way a browser does, renders the page, and matches what comes back — response headers, script and asset paths, DNS and certificate records, markup patterns and library fingerprints — against known signatures.     Running the check is the easy part — enter a domain above and the report appears. Reading it well is where the value is, because three details on every detection are routinely skipped.

    The category grouping is a diagnostic order, not an alphabetical one. Technologies come back sorted into groups — CMS, frameworks, servers and hosting, analytics, payments. Read the framework and CMS rows first: they constrain everything else. A site's analytics stack can be swapped in an afternoon; its rendering model cannot.

    The active state separates a dependency from a leftover. A technology marked active is one the site still exposes. Detections that are no longer active are the archaeology of a site — an analytics tool nobody removed, a payment provider from a previous checkout. Both are informative, but only one is a live dependency you would inherit.

    The first-detected date is the field that explains things. It records when the signal was first seen on that domain. A CMS detected years ago and a framework detected last quarter describe a site that was replatformed recently — which is a very different brief from one that has run the same stack since launch, and a far better explanation for a recent change in visibility.

    Every technology checker works the same way underneath, and understanding that mechanism is what stops you from over-reading a report.     The four things it reliably cannot see

    Server-side languages and databases. This is the limit users most often misread. PHP, Python, Ruby, Go, PostgreSQL and MySQL run on infrastructure that is designed to expose nothing publicly. Occasionally a header leaks a language version — that is a misconfiguration, not a detection method. If a tool confidently reports your competitor's database, treat it as a guess.

    Anything behind a reverse proxy. A CDN or proxy in front of a site terminates the connection and answers with its own headers. The origin's server software disappears behind it. This is why large, well-engineered sites often return fewer detections than small ones — a thin report can mean a sophisticated stack, not a simple one.

    Technologies that load conditionally. A consent platform that fires only in the EU, a chat widget that appears on pricing pages, an A/B testing tool serving half the traffic — none of it is guaranteed to be present in the single response the checker received. Checking a second URL on the same site regularly returns a different list.

    Anything genuinely new. Fingerprint databases are built from observed patterns. A framework released last month has no signature yet.

    A detection is strong evidence: signatures are specific, so a reported technology is usually really there.     Front-end frameworks are among the easiest technologies to detect because they have to ship code to the browser. React, Vue, Angular, Next.js, Svelte and similar frameworks leave recognisable bundle names, hydration markup and runtime globals. The framework is also the single most SEO-relevant detection on the page: it determines whether content exists in the HTML a crawler receives or only appears after JavaScript executes.

  • Why does the checker miss a technology I know is on the site?

    Four ordinary reasons, in rough order of frequency: the technology runs server-side and exposes nothing publicly; a CDN, reverse proxy or bot-protection layer served a different response than a normal visitor gets; the technology loads only on a page or subdomain other than the one checked, so try that URL directly; or it is genuinely new and has no signature yet. A missing detection is a limit of what is observable, not a claim that the technology is absent.

  • How do I find a company's whole tech stack?

    Start with the main domain, then check the subdomains separately — help centres, status pages, shops, app subdomains and careers sites are frequently built on entirely different platforms, and a single lookup on the apex domain misses them. The subdomain shown beside each detection tells you which property a technology belongs to, which is what turns a list into an actual map of the organisation.

  • Does a website's technology stack affect its SEO rankings?

    Not directly — there is no ranking bonus for a CMS or a framework, and no penalty for one either. What the stack determines is how easily a site can do the things that do matter: serve content crawlers can read without executing JavaScript, load quickly on mobile, and ship valid structured data. Two sites on the same platform can rank very differently. The stack sets the difficulty, not the outcome.
